Pandemic Update – July 3, 2009

Most of the world’s countries have been infected with the new H1N1 virus since the pandemic with the new H1N1 virus began. There have been over 439 confirmed deaths worldwide.

In the US, cases have occurred in all 50 states. There have been at least 177 deaths. Thousands have been hospitalised. Many are in intensive care and on ventilators. New York State is the worst affected with over 50 deaths, most of these have been in New York City.

In Mexico, cases had initially decreased after the entire country was shut down. However, there is recent evidence that the number of cases is starting to rise there again.

In Canada, there have been at least 32 deaths. Quebec has been worst affected in terms of deaths (14), but is closely followed by Ontario (11 deaths). Although there have been relative few deaths in Manitoba (4), over 30 people are on ventilators. First Nations people have been especially hard hit.

In Europe, the UK has had the most cases. There have been at least 4 deaths.

In South America, Chile and Argentina have had the most cases. Chile has recorded over 20 deaths. Argentina has recorded at least 46 and likely more. Argentina’s health care system is under extreme stress. Health care is being rationed.
