H5N1 originated in China. It is endemic in China. So, it is no surprise that people are still dying of H5N1 in China [hat-tip, treyfish].
A 22 year old woman who was 4 months pregnant living in Hubei Province became sick in May. She was hospitalised on May 23. She died on June 3. Birds were tested for H5N1, but none was found.
Hong Kong public health authorities were notified by the Ministry of Health in China of the case on June 4, 2010.
The Chinese government has a long record of hiding H5N1 (and other strange disease) cases. Why they have chosen to reveal this particular case at this particular time remains to be discovered.
